How to Clean a Showerhead: Remove Buildup and Restore Pressure
If your shower has lost pressure or shoots water in random directions, clogged mineral deposits are almost certainly the cause. Hard water leaves calcium and magnesium scale inside showerhead nozzles, and it builds up faster than most homeowners realize. The good news: cleaning a showerhead takes 20 minutes and costs almost nothing.
Why Showerheads Get Clogged
Hard water (85% of U.S. homes) leaves behind dissolved minerals when water evaporates. These deposits — called limescale or calcium carbonate — accumulate inside the tiny nozzle holes over months and years, eventually blocking flow and reducing pressure.

- Remove the bag and discard the (now cloudy) vinegar

- Turn the shower on full blast for 30 seconds to flush debris from the nozzles
Why it works: Acetic acid in vinegar dissolves calcium carbonate and other mineral deposits on contact.
Method 2: Remove and Soak (Best for Heavy Buildup)
For severe buildup or a deep clean, remove the showerhead entirely.
What you need:
- Adjustable wrench or pliers
- White vinegar (enough to submerge the showerhead)
- A bowl or bucket
- Old toothbrush
- Plumber's tape (Teflon tape) for reassembly
Steps:
- Wrap a cloth around the shower arm connection to protect the finish, then use pliers or a wrench to unscrew the showerhead (turn counterclockwise)
- Remove the filter screen inside the inlet if present — it's usually a small mesh disc that can be rinsed separately
- Submerge the entire showerhead in a bowl of white vinegar
- Soak for 1–8 hours depending on buildup severity
- Use a toothbrush to scrub all nozzles and surfaces
- Rinse thoroughly with water — important, residual vinegar can irritate skin
- Reinstall: wrap the shower arm threads with 2 layers of plumber's tape, screw on the showerhead hand-tight, then snug with pliers (don't over-tighten)
- Turn on water to check for leaks at the connection
Finish-Specific Cleaning Tips
Chrome and brushed nickel: Standard vinegar method is safe. Rinse thoroughly. Avoid leaving vinegar on longer than 30 minutes for brushed finishes — extended exposure can dull the coating.
Oil-rubbed bronze: Avoid vinegar — the acid can strip the finish. Use a 1:1 mixture of water and baking soda instead, or a cleaner specifically marked safe for ORB finishes.
Matte black: Same as oil-rubbed bronze — vinegar can damage the coating. Use dish soap and warm water with a soft brush.
Plastic/ABS: Vinegar is safe. Don't use abrasive scrubbers.
Cleaning Individual Nozzles
Modern rubber-nozzle showerheads (Moen, Kohler, Delta) have flexible silicone spray holes designed for easy cleaning. Simply:
- Rub each nozzle with your finger in a circular motion
- The scale breaks off immediately
- No soaking required for these types
Traditional fixed ceramic or metal nozzles require the vinegar soak method above.

Preventing Future Buildup

When to Replace Instead of Clean
Clean the showerhead if it's clogged. Replace it if:

- The nozzles are physically damaged or broken
