Banging Pipes (Water Hammer): Causes and How to Fix It
That loud bang or thud from your walls when you turn off the faucet or when your washing machine's fill valve closes — that's water hammer, and it's not just annoying. It's hydraulic shock that's stressing your pipes, joints, and appliances every time it happens. Here's what causes it and how to make it stop.
What Is Water Hammer?
Water hammer is a hydraulic shock wave created when flowing water is suddenly stopped. Water has mass and momentum; when a valve closes instantly, that momentum has to go somewhere. The result is a pressure spike (often 10x the normal line pressure) that crashes against the pipe wall and travels back through the system — creating the characteristic "bang" or "thud" sound.

That repeated stress is hard on pipes, fittings, appliances, and any valve in the system.
What Causes Water Hammer?
Fast-Closing Valves
The most common cause. Modern solenoid valves in washing machines, dishwashers, and refrigerator ice makers close in milliseconds — far faster than manual faucets. This sudden stop creates the maximum hydraulic shock.
Also caused by: pressure-assist toilets, sprinkler systems, dishwasher fill cycles.
High Water Pressure
High pressure amplifies water hammer significantly. At 80 PSI, a valve close creates more shock than at 50 PSI. If your home has pressure above 80 PSI (common when the pressure reducing valve fails), water hammer will be more severe.
Long Horizontal Pipe Runs
Long straight runs of pipe have more water in motion, creating more momentum and a louder hammer when stopped.
Loose or Unsupported Pipes
Pipes that aren't properly secured to framing can move physically when the pressure spike hits, causing both the bang of hydraulic shock and the thud of the pipe physically hitting a stud or floor joist. You'll hear this as a "bang-rattle" rather than just a thud.
Air Chambers Waterlogged
Older homes had air chambers — vertical sections of pipe above shutoffs — that used an air cushion to absorb hydraulic shock. Over time, water absorbs this air and the chamber loses its cushioning effect. The result: water hammer that wasn't present when the house was new.
Why Water Hammer Matters
Water hammer isn't just a noise complaint. Repeated hydraulic shock:
- Loosens pipe joints and fittings (especially compression fittings and threaded connections)
- Stresses solder joints on copper pipes, leading to pinhole leaks over time
- Damages solenoid valves in washing machines and dishwashers
- Stresses the water heater tank and connections
- Can cause pipes to physically shift out of support brackets
Homes with chronic water hammer often develop small leaks at fittings years later — a direct result of accumulated stress.
How to Fix Water Hammer
Method 1: Install Water Hammer Arrestors
The most effective permanent fix. Water hammer arrestors are sealed air chambers with a piston inside — the piston compresses when the pressure spike hits, absorbing the shock instead of letting it travel through the pipes.
Where to install them:
- At the washing machine supply hose connections (most common location — the #1 water hammer source in most homes)
- At the dishwasher supply line
- Near any solenoid-controlled valve
- At the water heater supply
Cost: $10–$30 per arrestor (hardware stores stock them). Installation is DIY-friendly — they thread onto the same connections as your supply hoses. A plumber can install them for $75–$150 per location including labor.
Why they're better than old air chambers: They don't waterlog over time. The sealed piston maintains its cushioning effect indefinitely.
Method 2: Reduce Water Pressure
If your home pressure is above 80 PSI, reducing it fixes or significantly reduces water hammer across the entire system.
- Check pressure with a gauge at a hose bib ($10–$15 gauge)
- If above 80 PSI, have a plumber adjust or replace the pressure reducing valve (PRV)
- Target 50–65 PSI — still plenty of pressure with much lower shock potential
Cost: $75–$150 to adjust an existing PRV; $250–$600 to replace it.
Method 3: Recharge Existing Air Chambers
If your home has the old vertical pipe air chambers, they may just need to be recharged:
- Shut off the main water supply
- Open the lowest faucet in the house to drain water from the pipes
- Turn the supply back on slowly — as water refills the pipes, air is pushed back into the chambers
- The chambers should cushion hammer again temporarily (until they waterlog again)
This is a temporary fix — if it works and then fails again within a year, replacing with proper hammer arrestors is the better long-term solution.
Method 4: Secure Loose Pipes
If you hear both a bang AND a rattle or thump, the pipe is physically moving. Fix:
- Locate the pipe section that's moving (trace the sound)
- Add pipe straps or clamps to secure the pipe to nearby framing
- Use foam pipe insulation as a cushion between the pipe and straps to reduce noise transmission
This is often needed in addition to a hammer arrestor — the arrestor stops the pressure spike, the straps stop the physical movement.
Method 5: Slow-Close Valves
For washing machine connections, you can also install slow-closing ball valves — they close gradually over several seconds rather than instantly, reducing the sudden stop that causes hammer. These cost $20–$40 per valve but require a plumber to install (requires cutting into the supply line).
Diagnosing Your Specific Case
"Bang when washing machine cycle changes" → Water hammer arrestors at washing machine connections. Classic case.
"Thud when faucet is turned off fast" → High pressure amplifying normal faucet closure. Check pressure, consider PRV adjustment.
"Rattle + bang when any water is used" → Loose pipe that needs strapping, likely in a wall or floor cavity.
"Started happening suddenly in a house that was quiet before" → Either water pressure has increased (PRV failing), or an air chamber has waterlogged.
"Loud clunk from walls when dishwasher or ice maker fills" → Solenoid valve slam — install arrestor at the appliance supply.
